There are basically two kinds of Australian cider. The first is made from apple juice concentrate and tends to be cloyingly sweet. However recently a few crushed Australian ciders have come on the market. Because there are little or no cider apples being grown in Oz, these ciders tend to be made from Granny Smith apples or similar, so tend to be tart and crisp without a great deal of body. If I had to guess, I would say 3 Oaks is made from Granny Smiths but with enough imported English bittersweet cider apples (like Kingston Blacks and Red Normans) to give it some depth. Either way, I think this is the best Australian cider out there. Its also pretty good value too. It has a clean, grassy, slightly metallic taste with just enough bitterness to round it off. Not as good as some of the imported ciders but because of the clean taste and lower level of bitter apples it is probably a more accessible cider than most.
